Audience Targeting Tactics That Reach Buyers First

Audience segments and intent signals mapped on a whiteboard

Everyone bids on the same keywords. Winners reach the right people first — buyers with intent, budget and timing on their side. These are the audience tactics we install in every paid search account we touch.

1. Tier queries by intent, not volume

Split keywords into buy-now, compare, and learn buckets with separate budgets and targets. High-intent terms get aggressive bids and dedicated landing pages; researchers get helpful content and remarketing, not a hard sell.

2. Layer audiences onto search

Observation-mode audiences — past purchasers, site visitors, in-market segments — reveal which queries convert for whom. Bid up where buyers cluster, and write ad copy that speaks to the segment, not the crowd.

3. Exclude like you mean it

Negative audiences are the cheapest optimization in paid search. Job seekers, existing customers (on acquisition campaigns), and chronic bouncers all get excluded — every dollar left goes to plausible buyers.

4. Match the message to the moment

A comparison shopper needs proof; a ready buyer needs an offer. Mirror the query's intent in headline one, and land each tier on a page built for its job. Relevance is a targeting tactic too.
